Swordfighting in the heart of Birmingham!

Come and experience what all the fuss is about! Learn historical European martial arts (also known as HEMA or historical fencing), focused on the German longsword traditions of the 15th and 16th centuries.

We run weekly classes which take place every Tuesday at the Moseley School Health & Fitness Centre,  just off the Stratford Road in Moseley, Birmingham. Beginner's courses run three times throughout the year.

Important Info

Weekly classes take place every Tuesday from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. Sessions include a warm-up, stretching, solo exercises, paired technique work, tactical drills, sparring games, and free-play.

Our curriculum is built around the “core Liechtenauer” sources of 15th century German, and also the 16th century German sources such as Joachim Meyer, Andre Paurñfeyndt, and the Kölner Fechtbuch. Our main weapon is always longsword, but we also regularly teach other weapon systems such as spear and staff, dagger, historical unarmed combat, and sword and buckler.

We always welcome beginners to our Tuesday classes. If you're interested in coming along, why not go to our CONTACT page and send us a message.

We run sessions at the Moseley School Health & Fitness Centre, just off the Stratford Road (approx. a 15 minute car journey from New Street Station). There are two entrances to the facility, but we suggest that people use Gate C, which is on College Road (B13 9LR). There is plenty of on-site parking, as well as male and female changing room and showers.

If you have your own HEMA gear (longsword, fencing mask, gloves, etc.), please feel free to bring it. If you don't have gear yet, there is plenty of club kit you can borrow.

Please wear clothing that is suitable for sports / strenuous physical activity. We train HEMA as a modern martial art, so please no period or fantasy costumes! Footwear should be trainers that are appropriate for a sports hall or dance studio floor: no boots; no heeled shoes! And, don't forget to bring a water bottle.

School of Historical Combat is for everyone! For insurance purposes, our current minimum age is 18 (16+ can train if accompanied by an adult), but there is no maximum age. Feel free to invite anyone you know who might be interested in learning how people REALLY fought with swords! Remember: your first trial session is always FREE:)
